Aastha, a newly-launched paan-flavoured condom, customised for commercial sex workers (CSWs) is slowly gaining popularity in the Mumbai's red light areas.
The Aastha condom is highly lubricated, does not tear easily and is packaged in a shampoo-like sachet so that CSWs do not shy away from carrying it when they visit customers’ houses.
Aastha Project—by Family Health International (FHI) of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, developed a new flavour keeping in mind the preferences of the community. A test of chocolate, strawberry, banana and paan was carried out and there was preference for the paan flavour.
